Putin Has Commissioned a Floating LNG Terminal in Kaliningrad
OREANDA-NEWS Kaliningrad region has become completely autonomous and independent from Europe in the energy sector, said President Vladimir Putin.
According to the Russian Leader, in recent years much attention has been paid to the energy supply and energy security of the region. "Including in connection with the plans of the European Union to exit the Baltic States from the Russian energy ring. As a matter of fact, this is their business, additional taxpayers' money will be invested there," he stressed.
"Already today, the Kaliningrad region is completely autonomous and can solve all problems in the field of energy and consumption of not only the primary source, but also electricity. The system is ready, and the passage of the autumn-winter period today speaks about it in the most vivid way," Putin said at the ceremony of commissioning of the terminal for receiving gas and a floating regasification platform.
"The building terminal and its infrastructure, if necessary, as I have already said, covers all the gas needs of the Kaliningrad region, completely, without the use of gas pipelines through the territory of neighboring States," Putin said.
The Head of State noted that "the importance of the terminal for energy security and strengthening of the energy base of the region cannot be overestimated in the first place given the geographical location of the Kaliningrad region".
He specified that the capacity of the terminal-2.7 billion cubic meters per year-almost completely covers the needs of the region and reduces to zero dependence on transit gas supplies.
"The Kaliningrad terminal is, in fact, a reserve system, increases the reliability of gas supply in the region. Now the gas is supplied through the pipeline through Lithuania, respectively, it is a transit gas pipeline, and in order not to depend on the transit, Gazprom has built this LNG terminal. It was manufactured in South Korea, it is a floating station that is attached to the shore. In the future, it can be sold or moved to another region, this is not a stationary, but a mobile project. It is designed to improve the reliability of gas supply, so as not to depend on one route," — said the leading analyst of the National Energy Security Fund Igor Yushkov.
