In the message published on July 15 Pompeo indicated that investments and other actions in relation to Russian export gas pipelines risk being subject to American sanctions. He added that “it’s a clear warning to companies that aiding and abetting Russia’s malign influence projects will not be tolerated.” “Get out now or risk the consequences,” the head of US diplomacy said.

The German government, commenting Pompeo’s words, declared that its position on Nord Stream 2 remains to be unchanged.

At present, the construction of the gas pipeline is 94 % complete. Russian energy corporation Gazprom hopes to launch Nord Stream 2 at the end of 2020 or at the beginning of 2021.
