Nuclear Power Plants in Europe are under Threat due to Heat
OREANDA-NEWS Extreme heat, established in European countries, in addition to provoking forest fires and falling river levels, led to the shutdown of reactors of a number of nuclear power plants, Bloomberg writes.
Thus, due to the weather of the French company Électricité de France, which generates about 3/4 of the country's electricity and manages 59 nuclear power units, the output had to be reduced. Two reactors have been shut down, and in the near future it is planned to reduce the capacity of two more by half due to the fact that the water in the rivers has warmed up so much that it cannot cool the station.
This led to the fact that electricity prices jumped to a five-month high. In turn, Électricité de France said that they would prepare nuclear power plants to work in conditions of more intense heat in the coming decades against the backdrop of a changing climate.
Earlier in July, the scientist warned that extremely hot weather could be established in Russia in the next five years. However, it certainly will not lead to a global catastrophe, he assured.
