OREANDA-NEWS. The Parliament of Moldova has introduced a state of emergency (PE) for 60 days due to the gas crisis. This is reported by TASS with reference to the relevant resolution.
“Declare a state of emergency on the entire territory of the Republic of Moldova for 60 days,” Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilitsa read out the draft resolution.
Speaker of the Parliament Igor Grosu said that the initiative was supported by 50 deputies. The deputies of the Communists and Socialists bloc spoke out against the introduction of the state of emergency, RIA Novosti reports.
A state of emergency was introduced in the republic due to the risk of stopping gas supplies from the Russian Gazprom. Moldova asks the company for an installment plan for January, but the Russian corporation has not yet agreed to Chisinau's proposal.
Contradictions over the gas contract between Moldova and Gazprom arose due to excessive growth in natural gas prices. In September, Chisinau extended the contract with the company and undertook to pay off debts, but Moldovagaz does not have enough money to pay for the current January deliveries.
