Moldova expressed hope for the continuation of gas transit through Ukraine

OREANDA-NEWS The head of Moldovagaz, Vadim Cheban, hopes that gas transit through Ukraine to Moldova will continue, even if Gazprom and Naftogaz do not sign a new contract, but the company is ready for other scenarios. He stated this in the Telegram channel.
"The situation is not easy, but there is great confidence that we will spend the winter without much worry, this applies primarily to the right bank. I still hope that it is possible to continue transit through Ukraine, even if there is no new contract between Gazprom and Naftogaz. The transit payment scheme may change – contracts will be concluded by European traders and the operator of the GTS of Ukraine with fuel payments at the Russian border," Cheban wrote.
He noted that the company has already tested alternative gas supply routes. The most realistic and profitable of them is the Trans-Balkan Corridor. But in this case, the gas must pass through the Turkish Stream, which, according to Moldovagaz, is "fully contracted" for the entire winter period.
"We will have to look for additional opportunities. The second point is the limited transportation options on the border of Turkey and Bulgaria, which may occur in winter. Thirdly, there are opportunities for supplies from Europe through Ukraine. However, both gas and logistics are noticeably more expensive, the volume of possible supplies along this route is also limited, and the risks are quite high," Cheban explained.
He noted that Moldova is also creating gas reserves for supply to consumers. At the moment, Moldovagaz has already purchased 120 million cubic meters of gas.
Since December 2022, Moldovagaz has been receiving gas from two sources – from the state-owned enterprise Energocom and Gazprom. Russian gas is sent to Transnistria in exchange for electricity, and Chisinau itself uses fuel reserves purchased in advance in different countries. The five–year agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine, concluded in 2019, expires at the end of 2024. Kiev has repeatedly stated that it does not plan to extend it.
