OREANDA-NEWS From November 2021 to November 2022, Moldova saved 553 million dollars on the purchase of Russian gas. The amount of money saved was estimated by the head of Moldovagaz Vadim Cheban.
According to Cheban, the contract with Gazprom was signed by the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE), was approved by the Supervisory Board of the company and was approved by the general meeting of shareholders of Moldovagaz JSC.
Since December 2022, Moldovagaz has been receiving gas from the state-owned enterprise Energocom and the Russian Gazprom. Russian gas is supplied to Transnistria in exchange for electricity, and Chisinau itself uses reserves in storage facilities in Romania and Ukraine.
In 2023, the European country refused to supply Russian gas in favor of buying fuel on the stock exchange. Thus, Moldova saved about 60 million euros, said the head of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic Viktor Parlikov. However, if Gazprom offers a favorable price, the country may return to supplies from Russia for the right bank of the Dniester.
In September, the Norwegian Wikborg Rein Advokatfirma AS and the British Forensic Risk Alliance completed an audit of Moldovgaz's historical debt to Gazprom. According to their calculations, the company's real debt is only 8.6 million dollars instead of the required 709 million. In response to the unwillingness to recognize the results of the audit, Moldova announced a course to abandon purchases of Russian gas.
