OREANDA-NEWS   Russian gas supplies to Germany are a long-standing tradition and have been beneficial for both sides. The corresponding statement by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, made on the air of the France 2 TV channel, is quoted by TASS.

The politician noted that Germany received fuel at a favorable price and "it was a win-win situation" that "began during the Cold War" and continued during her tenure in power. "I don't think it was a mistake," said Merkel, who served as chancellor from 2005 to 2021.

Earlier, she stressed that she still considers the right decision to build Nord Stream 2, noting that an important task was to obtain cheap gas for the German economy, which the country currently lacks. Merkel also referred to the political situation at that time (the project was launched in 2015, the laying of pipes began in 2018), in which she had, "of course, no support from the business community to stop gas trade with Russia."
