Kuleba: Hungary Excluded Ukraine from the Gas Transit Scheme at the Request of Russia
OREANDA-NEWS. Hungary has excluded Ukraine from the gas transit scheme at Russia's request, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said.
“We understand that the exclusion of Ukraine from the transit scheme was a requirement of the Russian Federation; Hungary accepted this demand. This is not in our interest. We defend our interests, ”the UNIAN Foreign Minister is quoted as saying.
He called on the Hungarian partners "not to unwind emotions", "to act pragmatically", to look for a way out of the crisis that would meet the interests of both Kiev and Budapest.
Kuleba also confirmed an appeal to the European Commission regarding the Hungarian-Russian contract.
Earlier it became known that Gazprom and Hungary signed a contract for the supply of gas until the end of 2036.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said that they were surprised and disappointed by the decision of Budapest and intend to apply to the EC.
Later, the head of the company "Operator GTS of Ukraine" Serhiy Makogon said that he expects a significant reduction or complete cessation of gas transit to Hungary through the Ukrainian territory.
Kuleba also said that Ukraine will contact the EC to understand how this agreement affects the energy security of the European Union as a whole.
Hungary and Gazprom made a new agreement on Monday. It is about deliveries to Hungary of 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year during the next 15 years. According to the contract, 3.5 billion cubic meters of gas will go through Serbia and 1 billion will pass through Austria.
