Kazakhstan to sign agreements on construction of nuclear power plant

OREANDA-NEWS Kazakhstan will soon conclude agreements on the construction of the republic's first nuclear power plant (NPP), identify sites for the construction of the second and third stations, Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov said at an expanded government meeting chaired by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
"In the near future, we will conclude the necessary agreements on the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the Almaty region. An analysis of the regions is also being completed to determine possible construction sites for the second and third nuclear power plants," the Kazinform news agency quoted Bektenov as saying.
On October 6, 2024, a republican referendum was held in Kazakhstan on the construction of the country's first nuclear power plant. According to the Central Election Commission of the republic, 71.12% of voters supported the project.
In June 2022, the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan announced that the NPP is planned to be built by 2035 with a budget of 11.2 billion dollars. The shortlist of candidates for construction includes the Russian state corporation Rosatom, South Korea's KHNP, China's CNNC and France's EDF. According to Tokayev, the construction and operation of the NPP should be entrusted to an international consortium, the general operator of which will be Kazakhstan. The final decision of the republic's authorities on this issue is expected in 2025.
