Germany Named Seven Obstacles to Nord Stream 2
OREANDA-NEWS. Eva Fischer, a journalist for the German edition of Handelsblatt, listed seven main difficulties on the way to the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project.
The most formidable obstacle for Nord Stream 2 is the EU gas directive, the article says. A specific problem for the project may be the provision of the document, according to which the owner of any gas pipeline cannot simultaneously be its operator, which directly concerns Gazprom.
The second obstacle is active resistance to construction from Poland and the Baltic countries.
In addition, the project threatens the Ukrainian economy, the budget of which depends on revenues from gas transit, the material says. According to Fischer, Kiev will not put up with the construction of the pipeline and will try to find powerful allies in order to somehow influence the further course of events.
The third difficulty is that the majority of the MEPs have a negative attitude towards Nord Stream 2. They have repeatedly adopted resolutions demanding to stop construction.
The fourth obstacle in the way of Nord Stream 2 is the German Green Party. If, after the September elections to the Bundestag, representatives of this political movement enter the coalition government, then the cabinet of ministers will deal with the gas pipeline, which will no longer defend the project as solidly as it did under Angela Merkel.
In addition, the proceedings are currently underway on the claims of the German Conservation Association and the German Environmental Assistance Association against the pipeline.
Another obstacle to the completion of the project may be the new US Secretary of State for Energy Security Amos Hochstein. Its task is to minimize the geopolitical risks of Nord Stream 2.
The last obstacle is the EU's own environmental policy, Fischer said.
