EU Has Offered Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic a Postponement of the Embargo on Oil from Russia
OREANDA-NEWS The European Union has proposed a postponement of the embargo on oil from Russia for Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. According to Bloomberg, they are invited to abandon energy resources by 2024. The rest of the EU countries should stop importing oil and gas in the next eight months: in six months and in eight months, respectively.
«The European Union has proposed to revise the ban on oil sanctions against Russia, which will give Hungary and Slovakia an additional year, until the end of 2024, to abandon Russian oil. The Czech Republic will also receive an exemption until June 2024», the message says.
Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev called the refusal of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to support the embargo on Russian energy carriers a courageous step. He wrote about this in his Telegram channel. According to Medvedev, the most reasonable leaders of the EU countries are «tired of moving to the cliff» along with the rest of Europe, which is ruled by the United States.
Recall, that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that both Hungary and the EU as a whole were not ready to impose an embargo on Russian oil. According to him, the sanctions proposed by the European Commission require a serious modernization of the supply infrastructure, and the efforts to implement the sanctions themselves require time and investment, which are unnecessary and cannot be financed on a market basis.
