OREANDA-NEWS Electricity supplies from Russia to China decreased by 34 percent in 2023 — from 4.7 to 3.1 billion kilowatt hours - compared with the data of the previous year, according to calculations by Kommersant.
Inter RAO announced the volume of electricity sent to China, which turned out to be at the average annual level of 2012-2020. The Russian company has stopped publishing accurate export data since 2022. During this period, it amounted to about three billion kilowatt-hours, the publication says.
A significant decrease in Russian electricity supplies to China was recorded in August last year. Then it was a question of an 18 percent drop in the indicator, due to a decrease in the production of hydroelectric power plants in the Amur region due to low water, an increase in consumption within the region due to heat and accidents at local thermal power plants. Against this background, the Russian electricity export operator managed to persuade China to increase the cost of supplies by the amount of the duty imposed by the government, which was seven percent.
As the Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Nikolai Shulginov said in December, quoted by the TASS news agency, the total export of electricity from Russia decreased from 13 to 10 billion kilowatt-hours in 2023, even taking into account the growth of supplies to Kazakhstan. This happened due to "a drop in volumes to China due to the unsatisfactory energy balance in the east."
