Alberta fires shut in 1mn b/d oil sands output
OREANDA-NEWS. Wildfires in northern Alberta in Canada have prompted oil sands producers and associated pipelines to abruptly shut down or reduce operations by an estimated 1mn b/d. Inter Pipeline says it has shut down its Corridor pipeline, which shipped around 345,000 b/d last year, and partially shut down its Polaris diluent line, which transported just under 140,000 b/d in 2015, as a safety precaution. Suncor has shut in the main oil sands operations at its Millennium and North Steepbank mines, which have a combined capacity of 320,000 b/d, as a precaution. Syncrude Canada has cut staff and says its 350,000 b/d Mildred Lake and Aurora oil sands mines, as well as its upgrader, are operating at reduced capacity as a result of its constrained workforce. Shell has shut in its 255,000 b/d Muskeg River and Jackpine mines, while Husky has reduced production at its Sunrise thermal development.
