Eaton Educates Local Elementary School Students on Energy Usage and Conservation
“ENERGY STAR Day helped students learn about the importance of energy conservation and was an ideal opportunity for our students to connect with professionals in our community,” said Heidi Pfannenstiel, principal, Huddleston Elementary School. “As we begin our summer break, we want the students to start to think about how they too can be ENERGY STARs, helping to save energy and our planet.”
The Eaton team performed experiments and talked about what energy is; where energy comes from; and the different types of energy with 700 kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Demonstrations included the differences between incandescent and light-emitting diode (LED) technology, including melting ice by both light bulbs to show energy usage and the amount of heat produced by each light source. Christmas lights with both technologies hooked up to voltmeters also compared energy usage.
The United States uses nearly one million dollars of energy each minute and students were taught how this impacts our planet and what they can do to help. Students were encouraged to turn off lights, televisions and ceiling fans and to unplug cellular phone chargers when not in use and to simply close windows and doors tightly to eliminate waste.
“Our hope is that the students start to get an understanding of simple, everyday ways to conserve energy and to learn about the environmental benefits of doing so,” said Kraig Kasler, president, Eaton’s Lighting Division. “As an ENERGY STAR Partner, we want to continue to reach out to the community to educate them on the environmental benefits of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
Students also learned about the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR Program, what its logo means on appliances and were encouraged to visit the informative and fun ENERGY STAR KIDS interactive website. The students enjoyed watching their teachers in a wind-blowing booth trying capture ENERGY STAR logos to win prizes for their classes, including backpacks, Frisbees, coloring books and more.
Earlier this year, Eaton was named by the EPA as a 2016 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year, an honor the company also received in 2015. The award is a result of the company’s performance and leadership supporting the ENERGY STAR Program. For additional information, visit www.energystar.com.
