Sites Giving Access to Russian Channels have been Blocked in Latvia
OREANDA-NEWS. The National Council for Electronic Media of Latvia has blocked access to the sites ntv.ru, rus24.tv, teledays.net, through which it is possible to watch Russian TV channels on the Internet. The full black list of blocked sites has been published on the National Council portal, Sputnik Latvia reports.
Earlier, Latvia announced that it is closing access to the RT in Russian website in pursuance of last year's decision of the Republic's National Council on Electronic Media, which banned the rebroadcasting of seven RT TV channels in the country.
The message reads: "Another attack regarding Russian content in Latvia, this time touched the Internet. Following a series of blocked channels on television, repression spread to the Internet. Now, Latvia has not only blocked access to RT TV channels, but also closed access to RT channels on the Internet. Together with rt.com, rus24.tv, ntv.ru and even teledays.net, a service through which you can watch Russian TV channels, fell under the distribution. The black list of sites was published on the portal of the National Council for Electronic Media of Latvia (NSESMI) ".
As Sputnik Latvia added, "for the first time, the regulator launches its tentacles into a zone that was considered free until now."
In June 2020, Latvia banned the broadcasting of the channels RT, RT HD, RT Arabic, RT Spanish, RT Documentary HD, RT Documentary, RT TV, arguing that they belong to the general director of MIA "Russia Today" Dmitry Kiselev, who is under EU sanctions. On 9 February, the Latvian National Council for Electronic Media adopted a decision to ban the retransmission of 16 Russian-language TV channels in the country, including REN TV Baltic and NTV Mir Baltic.
