Chinese Authorities Penalized TikTok’s Owner for “Deviation from the Values of Socialism”
OREANDA-NEWS. Chinese authorities conducted a large-scale inspection of the largest video platforms and had revealed a lot of violations. As a result, sanctions, including fines, were imposed on a number of services. There is the owner of the social network TikTok application among penalized entities.
The Cyberspace Administration of China fined Xigua (also known as Watermelon Video), a service owned by the Beijing-based company ByteDance and the whole social network. It is noted in the message of the agency that sanctions were imposed due to the fact that “vulgar content” is being distributed on the portal.
In total, the regulator conducted an audit in relation to 31 major video platforms; 10 of them were fined, in particular, Huya, DouYu and Bilibili streaming services.
In addition to fines, the Cyberspace Administration banned video services from registering new users and generating updates for applications, since users distribute pornographic materials and organize online gambling with the help of them.
The regulator’s statement says that all sanctioned services “deviate from the basic values of socialism”, “jeopardize the healthy upbringing of youth” and “spoil the atmosphere in society”.
