OREANDA-NEWS. Waze has more than 700,000 users in the San Francisco Bay area, and it intends to give them the ability to get to know each other better -- and help the environment in the process.

The Google-owned navigation app on Monday announced it is trialling a carpool service in the Bay Area for around 25,000 employees who work near Google's offices, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Adobe, Walmart eCommerce and the University of California, San Francisco, are among the workplaces that will take part in the trial. It'll involve the creation of a new app, Waze Riders, through which workers can flag their interest in hitching a ride.

Those jumping in on a carpool will of course be made to pay the driver, with the suggested fee being 54 cents per mile, says the publication.

Waze, bought by Google in 2013 for over $1billion, is used by civillian drivers to notify each other of police speed traps and traffic obstructions like crashes.
