OREANDA-NEWS Russian vermouth production in the first half of the year decreased by a third compared to the same period last year – to 2.2 million liters, Roskachestvo told RIA Novosti.
"Roskachestvo experts have estimated that in 2023, vermouth production increased by about 30% by 2022 and exceeded the 6 million liter limit. At the same time, in 2024, there was a decline in the production of vermouth. Roskachestvo experts estimated that from January to June of this year 2.2 million liters of drinks were produced with the indication of the "vermouth" category, a year earlier 3.27 million liters were produced in the same period," Roskachestvo said.
Most of the drinks produced in the first half of the year were from the brands Salvatore, Lavetti, Santo Stefano, and Chearoquonti.
At the same time, in 2023, the market for vermouth and flavored grape–based beverages in Russia grew to a record 22 million liters - this is the total volume of production and imports of products.
"According to customs statistics, 14.2 million liters of such beverages were imported to Russia in 2022, and in 2023 imports amounted to 15.6 million liters. It is worth noting that even sanctions and an increase in currency exchange rates did not prevent growth – in 2021, the volume of imports amounted to 11.8 million liters," Roskachestvo noted.
According to Olesya Latysheva, director of the Department of research and promotion of domestic wine products of Roskachestvo, head of the Wine Guide of Russia, the market growth in the last few years has been associated with the development of cocktail culture, which was launched by wine bars and summer terraces, and then picked up by retailers - there was a fashion for homemade cocktails.
"Now the main volume of sales is accounted for by white semi-sweet vermouths. In recent years, the volume of consumption of red vermouth as a component of popular cocktails has also grown. At the same time, three quarters of the sales of drinks with the word "vermouth" on the labels are imported from Italy," Latysheva noted.
