Nissan May Revive the Datsun Brand for Budget Electric Vehicles
OREANDA-NEWS Nissan has recently curtailed the production of cars of the budget brand Datsun, but it does not intend to part with it completely. According to the Automotive News media, Nissan marketers are working on options for a different use of the name Datsun. For example, it can be revived for a line of budget electric cars for the markets of developing countries. According to preliminary plans, the first «green» car can be presented in 2024.
It is expected that it will be built on the basis of an inexpensive Dacia Spring subcompact (aka Renault City K-ZE), which costs about 17 thousand euros in Europe. As the portal Motor.ru notes, for Datsun, this will not be the first revival. The brand, which existed from 1914 to 1986, was brought back to life in 2014 for the production of cheap cars, which lasted until 2022.
Before the cessation of production of «state employees», it was sold in India, Nepal, Malaysia, as well as in Russia, the Republic of Belarus and Kazakhstan. Recall that the Datsun brand appeared on the Russian market in September 2014 and was represented by two models – the on-DO sedan and the mi-DO hatchback, created on the basis of LADA Granta and Kalina, respectively. The cars were equipped with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 87 or 106 hp, which is combined with both a manual transmission and an automatic transmission.
The undisputed bestseller of Datsun was the on-DO sedan, whose share reached 80% of the total sales of the brand. In total, about 100 thousand cars were sold in Russia during the existence of the Datsun project.
