Indian Doctors Refuse to Be Vaccinated with Local Vaccine Covaxin
OREANDA-NEWS. Indian doctors do not want to be vaccinated with the Covaxin coronavirus vaccine, which was developed in India. It is reported that at the moment about 11% of people have been vaccinated with it, according to the Hindustan Times.
Earlier, the Indian authorities approved the emergency use of only two vaccines. The first of them is the Indian version of the "Oxford" vaccine called Covishield and the second one is the local Indian vaccine Covaxin. Moreover, in India, both vaccines are still in the third stage of research.
According to the latest figures from the Indian Ministry of Health, 12.3 million people have been vaccinated in the country, including 8 million doctors and 4.3 million of those who help the country in the fight against coronavirus - such categories as police and emergency services. At the same time, 1.4 million people have already received the second dose of the vaccine.
The Covaxin vaccine invented and produced by the Indian company Bharat Biotech has only been given to 1.2 million people, roughly 11% of those vaccinated, according to Co-Win, an online platform used to track vaccinations.
"This is all because of the initial discussion that Covaxin was just an experimental vaccine, which did not complete the third phase of the trial," said Subhash Salunhe, Maharashtra State Government Advisor for Vaccination Strategy.
In turn, Indian Health Minister Rajesh Bhushan attributed the lower use of Covaxin by Bharat Biotech's limited manufacturing capacity compared to the Serum Institute of India, the world's largest vaccine manufacturer that makes Covishield.
Bhushan told a news conference that they found that the effectiveness of Covaxin to be quite satisfactory, at least in proportion to the amount of vaccine the country has.
