OREANDA-NEWS. The IKEA distribution network will pay in the US $ 46 million to the family of a two-year-old boy, who was crushed to death by a company’s dresser. This was announced on Monday by the European News Agency.
According to him, Joseph Dudek died in 2017 in the state of California after a 32 kg Malm chest of drawers fell on him, which he was trying to climb on. A year earlier, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced four deaths from incidents involving Malm chests of drawers. After that, IKEA decided to withdraw this series of chests of drawers from sale.
AP notes that the boy’s parents were not aware of the mass recall of the product. They sued the Swedish company. According to the agency, IKEA eventually settled the case out of court, agreeing to pay the specified amount. "Despite the fact that no settlement can change these tragic events, we are glad that this trial has been resolved", the IKEA statement said.
In 2016, IKEA paid $ 50 million in compensation to settle cases of three similar cases of deaths of children as a result of incidents involving Malm furniture. IKEA, founded in 1943 in Sweden by Ingvar Kamprad, owns one of the world's largest retail chains selling furniture and household goods.
