CEMEX paves Egypt’s first concrete highway
CEMEX in Egypt supplied 130,000 cubic meters of concrete for the Cairo-Suez highway. This concrete paving solution offers this country a number of advantages over traditional asphalt roads, including greater durability, higher tolerance, better visibility—especially at night—superior resistance to severe weather, lower periodic maintenance, and higher road safety.
Although CEMEX has successfully applied concrete technology to roads worldwide, it is new to Egypt. This achievement resulted from multiple concrete initiatives over the past several years. Beginning in 2011, CEMEX in Egypt demonstrated the beneficial characteristics of concrete paving to Egypt’s General Authority of Roads and Bridges by working closely with the private sector on several pavement projects.
Following three years of workshops, studies, and deliberations with Egypt’s General Authority of Roads and Bridges, CEMEX in Egypt was granted permission to initiate the Cairo-Suez project. The preparation, design capabilities, road tolerance, and permanence of the solution, combined with the high on-site performance and expertise of CEMEX in Egypt, resulted in the Authority’s decision to invest in the construction of this important highway.
“We are very proud to have paved Egypt’s first concrete highway, and contributed to the development of the country,” said Ramon Piza, CEMEX Egypt Country Manager. “We believe the future of Egypt has to be built with sustainable and environment-friendly solutions.”
