SGX: Highlights of Singapore's Most Recently Active Stocks
OREANDA-NEWS. Among the different search criteria used in SGX StockFacts, investors can view the most recently active stocks by turnover. The platform details the average daily turnover for each stock over the past three months through the “Average 3 Month Traded Value” criteria. A simple click on the column header will sort the stocks according to highest average daily turnover for the period.
In the year thus far, Singapore’s 50 stocks with the highest three month average daily turnover have averaged a total return of 1.5%. This has compared to the MSCI AC Asia Pacific Index which has declined 2.6%, or 7.5% in Singapore Dollar terms. Over the same period, the FTSE ST All Share Index with 146 constituents has generated a marginal gain of 0.2%.
As of the Tuesday close, the 50 stocks with the highest thee month average daily turnover maintained a median price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 12.9 and a median price-to-book ratio of 1.0. Of the 50 stocks, 44 maintain a dividend yield with the average indicative yield at 4.2%. The five stocks with the highest thee month average daily turnover were DBS Group Holdings, Singapore Telecommunications, Jardine Matheson Holdings, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation and United Overseas Bank. Together, these five stocks averaged a year-to-date total return of 0.7%.
Of the 50 most active stocks, the 10 best performing stocks in the year thus far consisted of five Real Estate plays (Yanlord Land Group, City Developments, CapitaLand Mall Trust, Keppel REIT & Suntec REIT), three Consumer plays (Golden Agri-Resources, Wilmar International & Jardine Cycle & Carriage), an Industrial Conglomerate (Jardine Matheson Holdings) and a Digital play (Yuuzoo Corporation).

Aside from the five real estate plays tabled above, there are another 11 real estate plays within the 50 most active stocks of the past three months. This meant that Real Estate plays made up just less than a third of the 50 most active stocks, yet made up half of the 10 strongest performers within the group. As discussed on Monday, the SGX S-REIT 20 Index generated a 6.5% in total return in the 2016 year through to the 8 April close. Of the three stocks within the group of 50 stocks that represent the Agricultural Products Industry, two were within the five strongest performers of the year to date.
Note that the Digital Sector is typically made up of those companies with online business services or social media operations. YuuZoo corporation builds mobile-optimised and device agnostic targeted social e-commerce networks for businesses and consumers, either rolling them out on their own or together with businesses or brands. The Yuu-Branded Networks and Client Branded Networks provide turnkey solutions to monetise consumers in the mobile and online social networking space.
Also note that Jardine Matheson Holdings joined the MSCI Hong Kong Index effective 1 March and accounts for a 3.6% weight in the Index.
As noted above, 44 of the 50 stocks maintain a dividend yield while 44 of the 50 also maintain a P/E ratio. Some overlap means there are four stocks that don’t maintain a dividend yield and a P/E ratio, while two maintain a P/E without a dividend yield and two stocks maintain a dividend yield without a P/E ratio.
Comparative Performance of Dividend
Of the 50 stocks, the five stocks with the highest indicative dividend yields are Hutchison Port Holdings, Ascendas Hospitality Trust, Mapletree Logistics Trust, Mapletree Industrial Trust and Mapletree Greater China Commercial Trust. The average indicative dividend yield of these five stocks is 7.8% and the five stocks averaged a 0.1% gain in the year to date.
Within the 50 stocks, the stocks that maintain yields at or below 2.5% or do not maintain a dividend yield have performed stronger than those five stocks with the highest dividend yield in the year thus far. The 15 relevant stocks averaged a 6.7% total return in the year to date.
There are a total of 11 stocks with the 50, that maintain a positive P/E ratio with either no indicative dividend yield or an indicative dividend yield of 2.5% or lower.
