CEMEX participates on one of Latin America’s most iconic towers
OREANDA-NEWS. CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (“CEMEX”) (NYSE: CX) announced that CEMEX Mexico supplied approximately 60,000 cubic meters of concrete for Torre Sofia. Designed by Cesar Pelli’s renowned architectural firm, the tower is one of the most iconic buildings in Latin America.
Located in the Monterrey metropolitan area of Mexico, Torre Sofia is a 40-story residential and office building that reaches a height of over 500 feet or approximately 150 meters. With the Sierra Madre Oriental’s stunning view as inspiration, Pelli Clark Pelli Architects, the architectural firm responsible for the Petronas Towers in Malaysia and the World Financial Center in New York, designed this project. The tower’s design, location, amenities, and particularly, its concrete quality make this building an architectural jewel.
CEMEX supplied 18,500 cubic meters of special high-strength concrete tailored to the exacting requirements of this construction project. Torre Sofia required one of the largest continuous concrete pourings in northern Mexico—5,900 cubic meters of concrete in 36 hours.
“The concrete ledges outline Torre Sofia’s profile from its floors and balconies, forming a key element in its shape. We chose concrete for its aesthetic properties and for the structural stability it provides to the tower,” said Peter Follet, Partner, Pelli Clark Pelli Architects.
Built on 120,000 square meters of land, Torre Sofia is also a symbol of sustainability. Its implementation and development made the tower worthy of LEED certification for sustainable buildings. Moreover, this project marked a new level of responsible construction from its inception, beginning with the transplantation of 68 oaks, mesquite, and walnut trees.
