OREANDA-NEWS. A recent report related to the U.S.-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement (PTPA) has identified significant concerns regarding labor law enforcement & the right to freedom of association in the Latin American country’s non-traditional export (NTE) sectors, textiles / apparel, particularly for those workers employed on consecutive short-term contracts. The U.S. government pointed out problems concerning the enforcement of laws relating to occupational health and safety, including low inspectorate staffing levels & the inability of the administrative labor authority to compel employers to comply with reinstatement & other remediation orders. While recommendations were made, the U.S. government has committed to assess any progress by Peru within nine months and thereafter as appropriate.
