OREANDA-NEWS. April 04, 2016. Our series on the Hannover Messe continues with a specific example: the fiber industry. The pulp and paper industry has to deal with the core challenges facing industries in general: the need for higher-quality, flexible, and energy-efficient production. Environmental requirements are also increasing, leading to higher competitive- and cost pressures – added to which is the growing demand for new end products. The result is a completely new market environment that requires more flexible production. Our comprehensive and tailored portfolio provides the best possible support for managing these changes in the fiber industry, and at the same time helps industry players deal with future challenges.

Companies in the pulp and paper industry are facing a dramatic upheaval. The demand for traditional paper – for example, for newspapers or office use – is declining by about five percent annually worldwide, while the demand for pulp products continues to grow. These are principally fiber products that are increasingly being used as a substitute for oil-based products. What’s needed is a variable and resource- and energy-efficient production that can respond to a rapidly changing market. We’re helping our customers manage this transition with our integrated solutions specifically for the pulp and paper industry.

Flexible production through integrated operation

Our approach for the fiber industry provides solutions covering the entire production process. The Sipaper industry solution includes drive systems, automation, power distribution, and plant control systems combined with an end-to-end service strategy. The Integrated Drives Systems (IDS) drive concept ensures converters, motors, gear units, and couplings interact seamlessly, resulting in huge energy savings. Perfect coordination with the distributed control system helps the system save energy and costs without impacting quality.

The paper industry is highly energy-intensive. Our Sipaper Power is a product for smart power distribution. We assist you throughout the process as you plan your factory network, manage and control all power consumers, and monitor your system. Digitalization software processes design, simulation, and operational data, and the transition from Integrated Engineering to Integrated Operations makes more flexible production a reality – and also shortens time-to-market.

Fripa relies on proven technology

Bavarian company Papierfabrik Albert Friedrich KG (Fripa) relies on technologies from Siemens for the manufacture of sanitary paper, including paper towels. The product, also known as tissue paper, is one of the industry’s future-proof fiber products. Its new production line uses interlinked solutions from the Sipaper family. Totally Integrated Power takes care of the power supply and distribution. Products like Sinamics converters, Simotics motors, and FLENDER gear units are coordinated to create an Integrated Drives System (IDS). This solution, specifically tailored to the demands of the pulp and paper industry, also facilitates safe and easy plant control using Simatics PCS 7. The benefit for Fripa is that the entire automation solution comes from Siemens. This means problem-free integration throughout the entire lifecycle, including end-to-end service.

Our comprehensive range of services for the fiber industry will be on display at the Hannover Messe in one of the four Highlight Cubes at the Siemens booth in Hall 9. For Siemens, the huge change in the market is not just a challenge, but also a source of opportunities. We can help you respond to the changing market environment and develop future-proof solutions that follow the trend of process digitalization. Visit the trade fair and experience our integrated designs for energy supply, drive systems, plant control, and digitalization. We’ve set up a model that shows how our products work seamlessly together, and with the help of a virtual twin we can illustrate how we combine the virtual and real worlds in the fiber industry.

We’ll be looking at more highlights of the trade fair in the coming weeks. You can follow all the contributions in our blog series.
