OREANDA-NEWS. Tennessee Tech University’s College of Engineering has honored Eastman’s Carlos Carvajal as the first recipient of the Young Alumnus Achievement Award.

“Carlos embodies a renaissance engineer and his passion for Tennessee Tech and the engineering profession is not easily matched,” said Steve R. Anton, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Tennessee Tech. “Carlos is a success story and a wonderful role model for our students.”

Carvajal was born in Colombia and came to the United States when he was 16. He became a U.S. citizen in 2005 and received a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Tennessee Tech in 2006. He received his master of science in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech University in 2007. He has worked at Eastman since 2007 and currently serves as a global procurement manager. Carvajal earned his master of business administration from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 2014.

Carvajal has served in a variety of community organizations including the United Way and Fun Fest, and he remains active on Tennessee Tech’s Department of Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board.

“Carlos’ service is an outstanding example of how Eastman team members give back to their communities,” said Mike Humby, vice president and chief procurement officer. “His leadership reflects the culture of caring and responsibility we’re proud to have at Eastman.”

“I’m humbled to be honored by my alma mater with this award,” Carvajal said. “My education at Tennessee Tech prepared me well for my career. It’s important to me to help build the same world-class experiences for the engineers of tomorrow.”

The objective of the Young Alumni Achievement Award is to provide suitable recognition for College of Engineering young alumni, and others whose distinguished careers have contributed to or reflect credit on the various academic programs in the college and/or the profession.
