Toshiba Wins Order to Supply Autonomous Hydrogen Energy Supply System to JR East
OREANDA-NEWS. Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that it has received an order from East Japan Railway Company (“JR East”) for H2One™, the company’s autonomous hydrogen energy supply system. The system will be installed at Musashi-Mizonokuchi Station on the JR Nambu Line in Kawasaki City and start operation in the first half of 2017.
H2One™ is an autonomous energy supply system that uses a renewable energy source and hydrogen-powered fuel cells to deliver a CO2-free, environmentally friendly stable electricity supply. The system that Toshiba will supply to JR East, a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) model, consists of a solar photovoltaic generation unit, a storage battery unit, water electrolysis unit, hydrogen tanks, and a pure hydrogen fuel cell unit. It is controlled by Toshiba’s groundbreaking H2EMS™ (Hydrogen Energy Management System).
In the event of a disaster, such as an earthquake that knocks out power supply, H2One™ will provide uninterrupted, off-grid energy supply. Hydrogen stored in the unit’s storage tanks will be fed to the fuel cell and generate electricity to light part of the station building, and so on. In normal, day-to-day operation, H2One™ will be used to generate electricity, and will also produce hydrogen using electricity generated by solar panels on the station building roof. H2EMS™ provides optimal control over the system’s overall operation, including hydrogen production volume, and power generation and storage.
JR East and Kawasaki City are working to utilize hydrogen energy from fuel cells in such as “ecoste*1” and other initiatives. JR East has highly evaluated Toshiba’s commitment to the utilization of hydrogen, as represented by the company’s emergency evacuation center demonstration project in Kawasaki, and recognizes that H2One™ closely aligns with ”ecoste” initiative.
Toshiba offers four versions of H2One™ for a wide range of applications—the BCP model, a resort model, a remote island model and an office model. They are all contributing to the realization of an environmentally clean society where CO2-free electricity from hydrogen is widely used.
