Fujitsu Significantly Expands Its 1FINITY Series of Optical Transmission System Equipment
Using the 1FINITY platform, customers building a network can hold down upfront investment costs and expand incrementally in line with demand. The Transport family, for transport functionality, offers the T200 blade equipped with the latest coherent digital signal processing (DSP) circuit(3). It achieves world-class optical transmissions at ultra-fast speeds (up to 400 Gbps) over super-long distances (over 10,000 km).
Fujitsu will offer the 1FINITY platform globally to a wide variety of customers, including datacenter operators and telecom carriers, thereby contributing to the expansion of more complete network infrastructure to keep pace with expected increases in data traffic caused by the spread of the Internet-of-Things and the increase in video and other imaging data.
Background
In the market for optical transmission systems, until now the tendency was to promote all-in-one configurations, in which all functions relating to an optical transmission network were consolidated in one piece of equipment, for the efficient provisioning and operations of network infrastructure. In recent years, however, with rapid changes in network services both in Japan and around the world, there is an increasing need for optical transmission systems that employ a disaggregated architecture, in which each function is divided into separate modules. This enables individual functions to be quickly added or their performance to be upgraded, thereby allowing customers to quickly respond to changes while optimizing their investment.
Features of the 1FINITY Platform
The 1FINITY platform is a new optical transmission system that disaggregates each function-transport, lambda, switch, and access-into individual 1RU(4) blades.
Illustration of the concept behind disaggregated architecture
1. Optimizes investments in building networks
Because customers can start small and select just the functions they need, they can reduce the upfront investment costs required to build a network and expand in stages as demand increases. In addition, because each function is offered as an individual module, customers can quickly apply the latest technologies for any of the functions and continuously upgrade their performance.
2. Highly compatible with Fujitsu's existing optical transmission systems
Being highly compatible with Fujitsu's FLASHWAVE optical transmission system and other products, the 1FINITY platforms is easy for customers to expand or supplement the functions of their existing networks based on these products.
3. Supports network automation and virtualization
By combining 1FINITY with the SDN/NFV software of the FUJITSU Network Virtuora series, customers can easily bring automation and virtualization to a network that uses disaggregated architecture.
4. Use of open architecture enables high connectivity with other vendors' products
The 1FINITY uses an open architecture to connect to network equipment from other vendors. In addition, because it employs a standard interface in the form of open APIs(5), OSS(6) and BSS(7) can be easily integrated using a variety of SDN controller software.
Product Offerings
The 1FINITY platform is comprised of four product lines: the Transport family, Lambda family, Switch family, and Access family, with each corresponding respective functions.
Transport family
Delivers high-capacity transport functionality for metro networks, core network (connecting cities), and long distance
T100 | Achieves a transmission capacity of 800 Gbps using an optical transceiver specifically designed for transmissions between datacenters in metro networks (announced on August 18, 2015). |
---|---|
T200 | Achieves a transmission capacity of 400 Gbps using an optical transceiver specifically designed for long distance. Equipped with the latest coherent DSP circuit, it supports transmissions at ultra-fast speeds (up to 400 Gbps) and over ultra-long distances (over 10,000 km). It also applies adaptive modulation technology(8). |
T300 | Achieves a transmission capacity of 1 Tbps using an optical transceiver that can support a wide range of applications, from metro networks to core networks and long distance. Efficient transmissions with 10G, 40G, and 100G multiplexing. |
Lambda family
This allows automated settings for flexible wavelength assignment and path switchovers, depending on the objective. It provides a compact CD(9) ROADM(10) function that can initially support up to 4 directions and 128 wavelengths. Additional blades will be released in the future, enabling support for even more directions.
L100 | Main component of ROADM (wavelength's path switchover). |
---|---|
L110 | Splitter/Coupler (multiplexes wavelengths and transmits them to the main component of ROADM). |
L200 | Optical inline amplifier (amplifies a wavelength-multiplexed light beam; only for long distance). |
Switch family
This provides high-density Ethernet switch functions. It efficiently multiplexes Ethernet VPN(11), aggregates traffic for mobile backhaul use and connections between datacenters, and seamlessly connects to the optical core network.
S100 | For networks that need to aggregate 1 Gbps/10 Gbps Ethernet into 100 Gbps Ethernet, this provides 1.2 Tbps of bi-directional switch capacity. |
---|
Access family
This supports next-generation access technologies, such as 10G EPON(12) and NGPON2(13), providing a 10 Gbps optical access network geared toward optical communication services for households or businesses as well as mobile front-haul access networks.
A600 | Can accommodate up to 32 10G EPON ports (2048 ONU). |
