OREANDA-NEWS. Maersk Line’s Special Cargo team has challenged the traditional rules of liner shipping lately. These specialists are well familiar with moving oversized cargo that doesn’t fit in a standard container all around the world – and the terms “too long, tall or heavy” are seemingly not part of their vocabulary.

In February, the Special Cargo team at Maersk Line in Rotterdam added an impressive statistic to its r?sum?. The team loaded a tugboat weighing in at 350 metric tons – equalling the weight of 130 grown elephants! – onto Magleby Maersk headed to Singapore. This shipment broke the previous weight record of a 310 tons generator from Norfolk to Busan.

“Handling a break bulk piece like this requires team-work and planning throughout the organisation from Sales to Operations,” says Patrick van Lavieren, Regional Head of Special Cargo in Europe, Middle East and Africa for Maersk Line.

Most people know Maersk Line as a world-class container shipping company. But more than 40 years ago, Maersk Line entered the world of special cargo, expanding the company’s liner service offerings to include In Gauge, Out of Gauge and Break Bulk shipments.
