OREANDA-NEWS. February 29, 2016. IRU showcased to Sudanese authorities and other key transport stakeholders the benefits of implementing TIR to improve trade in the region, at a pioneer workshop in Khartoum.

Based on a tried and tested UN Convention, TIR is a global, intermodal, customs transit system and guarantee that improves trade by streamlining procedures at borders, ports and railways.

A main outcome of the workshop was the recommendation that Sudan, a key transit hub in East Africa, join TIR to significantly improve regional connectivity, security and trade through more efficient logistics.

Sudan Customs will take the lead to prepare a study and liaise with relevant stakeholders to start preparing for the accession and implementation of TIR.

The workshop was organised by Sudan Customs under the auspices of the Minister of Transport, Roads and Bridges, with participation from the Ministries of Trade and Foreign Affairs, as well as the national Police authority and Sudanese Union for Chambers of Commerce.
