Ukraine Purchased 63% of Its Imported Gas in Europe in 2015
OREANDA-NEWS. In 2015, imports of gas from the European market more than doubled from 5.0 to 10.3 bcm. Pursuing its diversification program initiated in 2014, Naftogaz now imports gas from more than 10 suppliers.
In 2015, the import from the Russian Federation decreased 2.4 times compared to 2014, from 14.5 to 6.1 bcm. As a result, the share of Russian supplies in Ukraine's gas consumption decreased from 34% in 2014 to 18% in 2015.
The past year also brought a significant increase in imports by private traders and gas consumers from the European market. Naftogaz share in imports from Europe decreased to the advantage of the private importers. Last year, they imported 1.1 bcm of gas compared to 0.14 bcm in 2014, a 7.5 times increase. This change follows the introduction from 1 October 2015 of a new regulatory framework as well as other steps aimed at the creation of an open and competitive gas market in Ukraine.
