Network Rail prepares for Storm Imogen’s arrival
OREANDA-NEWS. Network Rail has advised train passengers across South and West Wales to check before they travel as the regions brace for the arrival of Storm Imogen.
A yellow weather warning is in place from 3am on Monday morning until late afternoon with weather forecasters predicting strong winds and heavy rain. Cautionary speed restrictions will be in place on lines across South and West Wales.
Network Rail's frontline teams are on alert, ready to tackle any problems the storm may cause to the railway.
A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "We are drafting in additional teams in preparation for Storm Imogen’s arrival and our advice to passengers is to check before you travel, by visiting www.nationalrail.co.uk.”
The heavy rainfall across South Wales on Saturday saw flooding at a number of locations with temporary line closures and speed restrictions affecting journeys. Network Rail workers have been out in force clearing drainage systems of debris, but with rain falling on already saturated ground, there is the potential for localised flooding.
Network Rail owns, manages and develops Britain’s railway – the 20,000 miles of track, 40,000 bridges and viaducts, and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations (the largest of which we also run). In partnership with train operators we help people take more than 1.6bn journeys by rail every year - double the number of 1996 - and move hundreds of millions of tonnes of freight, saving almost 8m lorry journeys. We’re investing ?38bn in the railway by 2019 to deliver more frequent, more reliable, safer services and brighter and better stations.
