OREANDA-NEWS. February 03, 2016. CBOE Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: CBOE) reported today that total trading volume in January for options contracts on Chicago Board Options Exchange® (CBOE®) and C2 Options Exchange (C2) and futures contracts on CBOE Futures Exchange (CFE®) was 103.0 million contracts, with an average daily volume (ADV) of 5.4 million contracts, increases of 14 percent and 32 percent, respectively, from December 2015.   

When compared to January 2015's 107.2 million total options and futures contracts, total volume for January 2016 decreased 4 percent. ADV during January 2016 slightly increased by 1 percent over January 2015's ADV of 5.4 million contracts.

CBOE Trading Volume and Market Share

CBOE Volume: January  

  • CBOE's ADV for the month was 4.8 million contracts and total volume was 90.8 million contracts, increases of 33 percent and 15 percent, respectively, from December 2015.  When compared to a year ago, January 2016 ADV was unchanged and total volume decreased 5 percent.    
  • January ADV in index options increased 35 percent from December 2015 and increased 26 percent from January 2015.           
  • January ADV in equity options increased 31 percent from December 2015, but decreased 17 percent from January 2015. 
  • January ADV in exchange-traded product (ETP) options increased 35 percent from December 2015, but decreased 6 percent from January 2015.

CBOE Futures Exchange (CFE) Trading Volume

CFE Volume: January    

  • Total ADV at CFE was 272,021 contracts in January, an increase of 32 percent from December 2015 and 19 percent from January 2015.
  • Total volume at CFE for the month was 5.2 million contracts, up 14 percent from December and 13 percent from total volume a year ago.   
  • Trading activity in VIX futures during non-U.S. trading hours set a record in January with volume of 650,454 contracts, up from the previous record of 640,498 sent in August 2015. 
  • Monthly ADV for VIX futures traded during extended trading hours also set a new record with 34,234 contracts, up from 30,500 in August 2015.
  • Extended trading volume represented 12.6 percent of total VIX futures volume in January, an increase from nearly 9 percent in December 2015.

CBOE Holdings Average Revenue Per Contract

The company plans to report its average revenue per contract for the three months ended December 31, 2015, in conjunction with its quarterly earnings news release, which is expected to be issued on Wednesday, February 3, 2016.
