The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment has organised this international meeting during the Netherlands Presidency of the EU. European civil aviation is facing major challenges. And the global aviation industry is changing rapidly due to the expansion of non-European airports and airlines. This means new opportunities, but at the same time tests the ability of European airports and airlines to compete.

A new aviation strategy

The new EU Aviation Strategy focuses on economic growth, high-value jobs and good connections, worldwide and within Europe. The package also encompasses:

  • a bill to reduce the administrative burden, allowing member states to involve the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) more quickly should safety risks emerge;
  • rules for developing drones;
  • proposals for aviation negotiations with Turkey, the Gulf States, and Southeast Asian countries;
  • high standards for passengers’ rights and the environment;
  • a social agenda for high-value jobs in the European aviation industry;
  • initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions.
Panel discussions and innovation showcases

The Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment is organising the Aviation Summit together with KLM and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, which this year celebrates its 100th anniversary. On 21 January there will be a discussion of the new EU Aviation Strategy, featuring three panels on connection, innovation and Europe’s priorities. There will also be demonstrations on innovation and a round table session with the member states, the European Commission and the European Parliament. Formal decisions will not be taken at the informal meetings, but will follow at the formal Transport and Environment Councils in Brussels or Luxembourg on 3 and 4 March.
