OREANDA-NEWS. Caribbean and Central American countries that depend on subsidised Venezuelan oil supply are watching cautiously after the country's opposition took control of the national assembly. The opposition MUD coalition that prevailed in 6 December legislative elections has long opposed the decade-old PetroCaribe oil supply programme and has pledged an audit to eliminate oil "giveaways". Under PetroCaribe, Venezuelan state-owned PdV supplies crude and refined products to neighbouring countries on preferential terms. "Venezuela's oil is for Venezuelans," leading opposition deputy Tomas Guanipa said after last month's vote. "We cannot continue selling oil in 20 years when we are in need of immediate resources." The government of President Nicolas Maduro has pledged to maintain PetroCaribe. PetroCaribe deliveries started at about 200,000 b/d, but have fallen to 160,000 b/d in recent years as the economy has deteriorated and oil output dropped.
