OREANDA-NEWS. December 30, 2015. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) launches the publication Sector Contributions to the Promotion of Public-Private Alliances for Development, which synthesizes the modalities of support offered by the IDB departments, either through specific assistance or financial instruments, for projects that include alliances between the public and private sectors, the so called PPADs.

The Bank recognizes the role of PPADs to overcome the challenges of development in Latin America and the Caribbean as an alternative to increase investments in infrastructure and to modernize government performance in the provision of services, with fiscal sustainability.

However, the typical complexity of PPADs demands a multisector and interdisciplinary approach so that the various thematic axes and intervention strategies can converge to integrated programs that enable the implementation of public policies by this new means of acting.

The publication presents the way the IDB develops these integrated programs combining technical assistance, loans and non-financial products, such as studies, research and assessments to support the modernization of management in the three levels of government, promoting economic dynamics and improving the quality of life of the population, in areas such as health, education, sanitation, security, innovation, transport, energy, environment, tourism, climate change, social protection, labor market, among others.

Public-Private Alliances for Development (PPADs)

Given the objectives of the Bank to promote the economic, social and institutional development of Latin America and the Caribbean, and through the understanding that the PPADs are important tools for the implementation of public policies, the IDB Country Office in Brazil created a Committee to promote the debate and the construction of knowledge on this subject.

Composed of specialists from all departments of the Bank, the Committee promotes dialogue with strategic partners that include representatives of public sector on the three levels of government, private sector, civil society and academia. From this interaction, a series of strategic actions such as seminars, studies, evaluations and specific assistances, has been developed in order to contribute to the strengthening of Public-Private Alliances for Development in Brazil. This publication is part of the knowledge products of this initiative.
