OREANDA-NEWS. Local non-profit family service providers got a welcome holiday gift recently as Nine Mile Point announced several charitable donations to benefit the local community.  Donations to Oswego County Opportunities (OCO) will support parenting teens, homeless young people and services to aid survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse.  Additionally, funding was provided to support the Rural and Migrant Ministry in providing free medical care to the rural poor of Oswego County.

Proceeds from Nine Mile Point’s annual golf tournament directly support local charities. This year’s tournament raised more than $40,000 this year, thanks in part to key sponsors: CB&I, Enercon, GE Hitachi, Hanes Supply Inc., Rombough Electric, Sargent & Lundy LLC and Structural Integrity Associates.

"The tournament would not be possible without support from our contractors and vendors," said Pete Orphanos, site vice president.  "We’re grateful for the opportunity to support these vital Oswego County human service organizations and help our neighbors in need.”

This year’s proceeds support three specific OCO programs.

• The OPTIONS Program, which assists pregnant or parenting teens and their babies in accessing health care, education, job readiness, pediatric care and life skills

• The PATH program, a transitional living program for homeless young people ages 16 to 21 that teaches them independent living skills, educational goals and life skills

• Services to Aid Families (SAF), which provides services to survivors of cases including domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and elder abuse. The program assists and empowers survivors as well as community outreach to respond to these issues.

“We are thrilled and honored to receive this tremendous gift! Exelon Generation’s donation will directly impact our community and make a huge difference in our ability to help those in need,” said Diane Cooper-Currier, OCO Executive Director.

The Rural and Migrant Ministry of Oswego County also received a grant of $3,000 to support their efforts in providing primary medical care to the rural poor. It is the only free medical clinic in Oswego County and provides 300-plus doctor visits per year for the patients it serves through its Open Hands Clinic. The organization’s medical staff consists entirely of volunteers.

NMPNS is located north of Syracuse in Scriba, NY, and generates enough electricity to power over 1 million average American homes.
