OREANDA-NEWS. Between 8 and 10 December 2015, NPO Saturn hosted a working session dedicated to summarizing the results of “TheBarCode” project carried out under the aegis of the European Commission’s Seventh framework program.

“TheBarCode” project focusing on the development of new materials, technologies and tools for modeling multifunctional thermal barrier coatings got on its way back in January 2013. Ceramic thermal barrier coatings featuring extensive life and low heat conductivity will allow using the gas turbine cycle in a more efficient way through the increase of the temperature of gases entering the turbine. In the end, such coatings will allow to increase the efficiency of power generation in co-generation processes as well as lead to a decrease of fuel consumption in aircraft engines.

“TheBarCode” project was realized by a consortium of 12 partners representing 8 different countries (Greece, Russia, Germany, Belarus, Armenia, Romania, Great Britain and Belgium). Overall project coordination was ensured by the Technological Educational Institute of Sterea Ellada (TEISTE, Greece). NPO Saturn, a Russian industrial enterprise, became an equal project partner along with the leading European research-and-technology institutes and universities, such as TEISTE, BIC, TUC, PMI, IPR and INCAS and the likes of such small-to-medium companies as PLASMA, ELEMENT, MIRTEC, NUMECA and OSM.

NPO Saturn joined the project activities in April of 2014 as an industrial partner and the end user of the project results. The project work package assigned to NPO Saturn included the elaboration of a set of requirements for the multifunctional thermal barrier coatings, fabrication of test specimens made of Russian material and carrying out of a comparative analysis of the characteristics of the thermal barrier coatings developed by the project participants applied on the Saturn-supplied specimens in the conditions close to the in-service environment.

Besides, NPO Saturn has emerged as a co-executor of the project activities dedicated to the development of numerical modeling tools where it was working in conjunction with such companies as NUMECA and ELEMENT. In the frame of the numerical modeling tools development, the project participants carried out extensive research into the influence of the modified properties of multifunctional thermal barrier coatings on the corresponding non-stationary mode of deformation of a turbine blade and the influence of thermal cycling on the coating life.

“In the course of TheBarCode” European project, a consortium of R&T institutes, labs and private companies was working on the creation of breakthrough materials such as thermal barrier coatings applied on blades of a gas turbine engine. Such protective coatings exclude direct contact of the blade material with the aggressive operating environment; ensuring longer and more safe in service life of the engine parts  which, in turn, contributes to extend the life the engine as a whole. Saturn has played an invaluable role in this project by having provided the test specimens and demonstrating how the project-developed thermal barrier coatings behave in experimental conditions, - highlighted Vassilis Stathopoulos, project coordinator empowered by the European Commission and associate professor at TEISTE.

Speaking about the project results and prospects, Vassilis Stathopoulos noted: “TheBarCode” project has allowed to generate an important technological and scientific backlog of knowledge and competences. However, through this project we have been able to achieve not only some unprecedented technical results. The project has allowed to consolidate a team consisting of the representatives of 8 countries, each having learned something new. One of the objectives, set by the European Commission with relation to this project, was to unite the peoples in reaching a highly important goal in terms of the research and technological advancement. Thanks to this project, the well-coordinated collaboration of scientists and engineers with completely different cultural backgrounds, countries and companies, we now see an eventual emergence of new projects and initiatives. And the entire project team, whereby I have been lucky to be the leader over the last three years, agrees that if tomorrow we received a proposal to commit to another, not any less ambitious project, we are a coherent team now ready to take on any such challenge.”

According to Dmitriy Karelin, NPO Saturn deputy general designer for research and development, “it is not the first international project for NPO Saturn. Getting involved in cutting-edge European R&D projects is an important vector of our activity. The goal of such collaboration is the search for new solutions of today’s technical challenges working shoulder-to-shoulder with our foreign partners as well as the enhancement of the Russian specialists’ competitive edge in the field of design and fabrication of the advanced aerospace-related products. Working together on different projects, we are making a serious step forward in developing new technologies; at the same time we come to understand in which direction we need to keep going. We are confident that the results of any such project as “TheBarCode” will be in demand in the frame of the new programs carried out by NPO Saturn and United Engine Corporation (UEC) on the whole.”
