Enbridge shuts Line 9 ahead of occupation

OREANDA-NEWS. December 08, 2015. Enbridge stopped flows on the 300,000 b/d Line 9 crude pipeline as protesters occupied the company's facility near the Ontario-Quebec border.

The company said it shut the line as a precaution before the occupation, and that authorities were "on site and managing" the situation this morning.

Protesters this morning posted a video on social media showing them closing the valve.

Enbridge brought Line 9 on stream just last week after more than year of delays. Regulators required the company to add 17 valves and perform full-line hydrostatic testing before the reversed section between Westover, Ontario, and the Montreal, Quebec, terminus could open.

Line 9 carries mostly light crude but Enbridge has said it could move up to 50,000 b/d of heavy grades. It serves the 265,000 b/d Valero refinery and 137,000 b/d Suncor refinery in the Montreal area.
