Moldova has climbed eight positions in the global report on information society development

The Republic of Moldova has climbed eight positions in the global report on the development of information society, ranking 68th out of 167 countries included in the ranking. The data are contained in the annual report on monitoring the development of information society worldwide “Measuring the Information Society 2015”, launched by the International Telecommunication Union within the framework of the XIII Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium – WTIS-2015.
Globally, the Republic of Moldova is in the category of the countries with the medium level of ICT development with 5.81 points in the IDI Index, exceeding the world average with 0.78 points. The trend is also maintained at the European level, the Republic of Moldova keeps the average gap with States in the region. At the same time, it is confirmed an approach to Romania’s results, which ranks 59th, and overtake of Ukraine, which ranks 79th.
The world leader in information society development are South Korea, Denmark, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Luxembourg, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Hong Kong and Norway.
According to the data submitted, 3.2 billion people or 43.4% of the global population have Internet access and mobile telephony is used by 95% of the population.
The report assesses the results achieved in the development of information society, information technology and communications at the global level, based on quantitative indicators and benchmarks. The main element of the Report is the ICT Development Index which includes 11 indicators grouped into three sub-indices: ICT Use, Access and ICT Skills. It was introduced by the International Telecommunication Union in March 2009 to compare the level of development and evolution overtime of the ICT sector.
