Yatsenyuk expects European Commission to consider position of EU Member States and North Stream 2 won't be built
OREANDA-NEWS. November 30, 2015. "Ten member states of the European Union supported Ukraine today and toughly criticized the construction of Nord Stream. We expect the European Commission to consider the position of our European partners, and this project won’t be built," underlined Arseniy Yatsenyuk at a meeting of the anti-crisis energy staff.
The Prime Minister stressed that today the ten member states of the European Union "firmly objected to the construction of Nord Stream." Arseniy Yatsenyuk reminded that for the first time he had raised this issue at the joint press conference with the Prime Minister of Slovakia.
"We take a very clear position: the construction of the second branch of Nord Stream is an anti-Ukrainian and anti-European project," he pointed out.
The purpose of this project, the Prime Minister stressed, is "to deprive Ukraine of transit facilities as well as of about USD2 billion of transit fees": "This project aims at strengthening the Russian gas monopoly in the European energy market."
The Prime Minister emphasised Ukraine to be one of the key transit states: "Our facilities allow to transit more than 120 billion cubic meters of gas to the countries of the European Union. We possess the largest gas storage facilities in Europe."
Ukraine, he recalled, had approved a law that enables European and American companies to take part in the modernization and management of the Ukrainian gas transportation system.
"We and the European Union should not in words but in deeds, including the participation of European companies in the Ukrainian gas transportation system, build a common energy policy of Europe, in which Russia won’t have an exclusive influence that it has had in the past few decades," Arseniy Yatsenyuk highlighted.
