Moldovan, U.S. officials tackle support for country's development
OREANDA-NEWS. Acting Prime Minister Gheorghe Brega today met U.S. Ambassador to Moldova James D. Pettit. The ambassador conveyed a message of solidarity on behalf of the American people and on his own behalf to Brega referring to the incident occurred in Afghanistan. James D. Pettit assured that his country would provide every support to clear up the circumstances of the tragic incident.
The two officials’ discussion was mostly focused on achievements of the Compact Programme of Millennium Challenge Corporation in Moldova. Attending the meeting was also Executive Director of the Millennium Challenge Account Moldova Valentina Badrajan.
Badrajan said the Compact Programme had been focused on development of agricultural sector in Moldova, by restoring ten irrigation systems for farmers from different regions of Moldova, allowing access to water for about 12,000 hectares of farmland. In the next two years, the farmers will receive assistance for ensuring irrigation process. Also, via the Compact Programme cold stores have been built with a capacity of 39,000 tons of fruits and vegetables. Due to the USAID Programme, the farmers received support to ensure marketing, with the export of good extended to such countries as Bangladesh. Another achievement of the Compact programme is reconstruction and modernization of a segment of 96 km of the M2 national road, Sarateni-Soroca.
James D. Pettit appreciated the successful implementation of the Compact programme in Moldova and voiced hope that the authorities would take measures needed to ensure Moldova’s qualification for a new programme. The official reiterated his country’s support for developing Moldova, stressing that the future projects would be carried out for prosperity of Moldovans.
For his part, Gheorghe Brega thanked the U.S. partners for assistance provided to Moldova in different sectors, especially, the one offered via the Compact Programme.
The FPM Moldova ensured the programme’s efficient implementation during five years (2010-2015).
As many as 262 million dollars has been spent to meet the goals of the programme. The money were donated by the American people.
