More than half of the MegaFon base stations in St. Petersburg support LTE-Advanced technology
OREANDA-NEWS. Already, in St. Petersburg, all base stations are equipped with Dual Carrier technology, providing 3G network speeds up to 42 Mbit/s, and more than 60% of base stations in the “City on the Neva” support LTE-A technology, the data transmission speed of which reaches up to 300 Mbit/s.
The modernisation of the technical infrastructure of 3G and 4G networks in the Northwest branch of MegaFon has improved the quality of voice and packet services and has led to an increase in coverage and speed of data transmission. High speed mobile Internet is very relevant for consumers of “heavy” content. Infrastructure and technology that use MegaFon allow subscribers from almost any location to communicate via video chats without audio or video delays, watch online shows and movies in HD, load large photo galleries, and work with presentations and archives.
“Since the start of 2015, we have expanded the capacity at half of the 3G base stations in St. Petersburg and Leningrad region and significantly increased 4G coverage. Our experts continue to introduce new technologies that allow customers, no matter where they are, to use all the features of high-quality mobile communication”, says Aleksey Titov, Director of Infrastructure of the Northwest branch of MegaFon.
To date, approximately 60% of base stations in the Northwest branch are equipped with Dual Carrier technology, which provides 3G network peak rates up to 42 Mbit/s, while in the Northern capital MegaFon has introduced this technology to all base stations. In addition, MegaFon is expanding the availability of 3G networks: base stations in the Leningrad region, including in Priozersk, Vyborg and Vsevolozhsk districts, began to provide additional services in the UMTS 900 standard, which ensures high speed data transfer and wider coverage compared to the previous UMTS 2100 standard. Thanks to this solution, the reliable area of the network signal has been significantly increased. This will allow an even greater number of MegaFon subscribers to access high speed Internet.
This year, major changes also affected 4G networks. About a third of all MegaFon base stations in the Northwest are already working on LTE technology, providing access to high speed mobile Internet in more than 50 regional centres in all regions of the Northwest branch. Thus, for the third quarter of 2015 the coverage area of LTE-A technology has been significantly expanded in all parts of St. Petersburg at an increase of more than 35%. Now in the “City on the Neva”, more than 60% of all MegaFon base stations support this technology, which means that users can more freely use mobile Internet at speeds up to 300 Mbit/s.
