OREANDA-NEWS. November 18, 2015. About 90 up-and-coming football players in the Detroit metro area took the opportunity to hone their skills at a free, two-day football camp co-sponsored by Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s (MPC’s) refinery in Detroit, Mich., and Walbridge, a Detroit-based construction company.

The River Rouge School District Youth Football Camp gives participants instruction and the chance to practice some drills before getting in a game, along with lunch, competitive events, and prizes. “The fastest sprinter won an iPad, and the next three fastest runners won 2-in-1 laptops,” notes Clenetta Frazier, MPC’s advanced HR consultant at the refinery who worked with the school district to coordinate the event. “Members of the team who won the game received gift cards.”

As an added bonus, former NFL player Larry Lee stopped by. Lee played for the Detroit Lions, the Miami Dolphins and the Denver Broncos. After his playing days were over, he served as vice president of football operations for the Detroit Lions. “Larry spoke to the participants on the power of their words and on speaking positively about what they want out of life,” says Frazier.

Although open to the entire metro area, this is the first time an event of this nature was held near the refinery, according to Frazier. “We’re very grateful to the River Rouge School District for taking the lead on this football camp,” said Detroit Refinery Manager Dave Roland. “We were proud to co-sponsor an event like this, which teaches kids about commitment and discipline in a fun way.”
