OREANDA-NEWS. UT Professor of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology ?lo Mander was elected member of the pan-European academy Academia Europaea in the field of Earth and cosmic sciences. The membership of the academician recognises the professor’s international research work and continuing contribution to European science.

“Membership of the Academy of Europe is a great acknowledgment. Considering how few of its members are from small European countries, the responsibility of each representative of such small country to its home country is significant. Hopefully I can mediate progressive ideas from both parties in order to benefit Estonian science and introduce Estonian science internationally,” said UT Professor of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology ?lo Mander.

Professor Mander has been involved in international projects since the beginning of the 1990s and it is why his research group has developed a tight and efficient cooperation network on the European level. From more than 30 international projects, he recalls the projects of the European Union Fifth Framework Programme as most likeable with specific content as well as results.

For the last three years, Professor Mander has worked simultaneously at the University of Tartu and the National Research Institute of Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture (IRSTEA) in Antony, France.

The Academy works to achieve the highest possible quality in studies and research and education in Europe. Academia Europaea was founded in 1988 and there are currently more than 3000 members, including leading experts from various fields: exact, natural, technology, social and medical sciences and humanities.

Professor Mander was elected member of the Academy on 6 September 2015 by the Council of Academia Europaea.
