Timor-Leste, ADB Mark Completion of Road Upgrade Between Karimbala and Atabae
OREANDA-NEWS. The Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Rui Maria de Araujo, other government officials, and Asian Development Bank (ADB) representatives took part in a ceremony today to mark the opening of an upgraded road linking Karimbala to Atabae.
“The upgraded road will significantly improve the north coast road route, boosting connectivity between Dili, the western regions of Timor-Leste and Indonesia,” said ADB Director General, Xianbin Yao, who took part in the ceremony, during a 3-day visit to the country. “This new, more reliable, road should increase passenger and cargo traffic but all road users should exercise great care as safety is paramount.”
The upgraded route is part of the broader ADB-assisted Road Network Development Sector Project. The project aims to accelerate economic opportunities, promote private sector growth and reduce poverty. It also incorporates climate-resilient designs in road works to reduce vulnerability to floods and landslides.
During his visit, Mr. Yao will meet with Minister of Public Works, Transport and Communications, Gast?o de Sousa, and other senior government officials to discuss ADB’s work in infrastructure improvement, private sector development, skills training and regional cooperation. The goal of the trip is to build on ADB’s strong partnership with Timor-Leste.

Established in 1966, it is owned by 67 members – 48 from the region. In 2014, ADB assistance totaled \\$22.9 billion, including co-financing of \\$9.2 billion.
