OREANDA-NEWS. October 12, 2015. Flip-up falcon-wing doors. A gorgeous panoramic windshield. The safest SUV ever. Zero emissions. And, of course, a dazzling Tegra-powered infotainment system. Tesla Motors introduced its Model X this evening. And it’s a sport-utility vehicle like no other.

I’m in a massive throng — thousands of avid Tesla Motors fans — here at a nondescript building just blocks from the firm’s futuristic factory. And Tesla’s much-anticipated Model X is an amazing follow-up to its now legendary Model S sedan.

The vehicle is filled with striking features, including an NVIDIA Tegra-powered infotainment system. When Tesla launched the Model S, its Tegra 3-powered 17-inch LCD touchscreen — which controls everything from navigation and music streaming to ride settings — became a signature feature, unlike anything car buyers had ever seen. In addition, the ability to update this system over the air let Tesla add new capabilities even after the vehicle left the factory.

Refined Technology, and a Rugged Ride

The sedan’s SUV sibling keeps this signature feature. It boasts new options accessed through the infotainment and cluster system, both powered by NVIDIA. Drivers and passengers will enjoy Tesla’s state-of-the-art navigation, rich graphics, a lightning-quick user interface and interactive cockpit controls. A new air filtration system delivers air more pure than you’d find in a hospital operating room. You can select outside air circulation, cabin circulation, or “Bioweapon Defense Mode,” to leverage the first true HEPA filter in an SUV.

The SUV’s expanded layout offers a roomier setup for 7 people, with four wheel drive options, towing package and a tall riding position for a commanding view. The design of the vehicle is unique and according to Tesla is the safest SUV on the market, exceeding the 5 star crash test ratings and offering the lowest rollover injury risk in the industry.

Wings Come Standard

The SUV also features doors hinged along the central roof beam. That lets them open up and out of the way. They’re more than just convenient, however. The falcon wing doors add an elegant gracenote to the sleek vehicle’s design, and can be operated in extremely tight spaces. The front doors can even open and close automatically.

But it’s the SUV’s electric motor that makes this car fly. With an acceleration time of 3.2 seconds for 0-60 mph on the top-of-the-line model, and a top speed of 155 mph, the Model X is plenty quick. The Model X will go up to 257 miles on a full charge and will charge in approximately the same time as the Model S.

We suspect this amazing SUV will go far with consumers, too.
