OREANDA-NEWS. The UN Global Compact, UN Habitat, International Chamber of Commerce and IRU launched the Global Partnership for Sustainable Transport in New York last week.

Held under the auspices of the 70th UN General Assembly, the launch event brought together high-level representatives from the global transport community and companies including Volvo, Maersk and Michelin amongst others.

Governments and international organisations also demonstrated their support for this innovative, multi-stakeholder business-led partnership, noting the role it can play in implementing the UN’s post-2015 agenda and new Sustainable Development Goals in transport related areas.

The event was supported by the Turkmenistan Permanent Mission to the UN.

“I warmly support the work of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Transport”, said Wilma Mansveld, Minister for the Environment, The Netherlands, adding the importance of “moving ahead, listing actions and underpinning them with concrete results.”

Vice Director of the Institute of Market Economy in Beijing, Mrs Wei Wang underlined the importance of the Partnership in the future implementation of China’s One Belt One Road strategy.
