OREANDA-NEWS. October 05, 2015. Uralvagonzavod Corporation and Experimental Design Bureau ATOM won the most prestigious design award RedDot in the Design Concept category for the innovative R1 tram.

Red Dot Design Awards is a highly prestigious European competition in the field of consumer goods design. It is attended by over 4,000 various designers every year, including giants, such as Apple, Mercedes, Audi, Bork.

Winning the competition is one of the most prestigious design awards given by Design Zentrum Nordhein Westfalen. The products are nominated in three categories - Product Design, Communication Design, Design Concept.

The awarding ceremony was held on September 25 at Red Dot Museum in Singapore. The event gathered about one hundred most influential designers from around the world.

Experimental Design Bureau ATOM was represented at the ceremony by Aleksey Maslov, Project Chief Designer, Anton Kuzhilny, Designer, Grigory Reshetnikov, 3D Sculptor. Aleksey Maslov: "This award once again confirms that Russia can create beautiful, modern, high-tech products and it is becoming more and more significant player in the global industrial design and engineering market." Aleksey Zharich, State Secretary, Deputy General Director of Uralvagonzavod Corporation, in his turn noted that "Uralvagonzavod is a worthy leader in the Russian mechanical engineering. The corporation has unique competencies in the transport and special mechanical engineering, regularly producing high-tech products for civilian and military purposes, which are highly praised by experts from around the world."

R1 Tram is the first Russian public transport which was given the RedDot Award. Only 5%of the 4,000 annual applicants win this competition.

As a reminder, R1 was developed by Experimental Design Bureau ATOM by order of Uralvagonzavod Corporation. The tram’s presentation was held at the INNOPROM Exhibition in 2014. R1 won general applause and received high accolade from the world's leading industrial designers, such as Marat Gunak (Mercedes), Chris Bangle (BMW), Karim Rashid, Ross Lovegrove (Apple, Sony).

Currently, serial production of the tram is being prepared.
